About the Mission

Landed in the Martian arctic in May 2008 to dig into water ice. Its robotic arm touched ice just centimeters below the soil. Observed snow falling from Martian clouds and found perchlorate salts in the ground. Confirmed the northern plains bury a vast ice sheet. The lander succumbed to the polar winter, encased in carbon dioxide frost.
