About the Mission
Returned the first photographs of the far side of the Moon in October 1959. Film was developed on board, scanned, and transmitted to Earth in a marvel of automation. Revealed that the far side lacks the dark seas of the near side. One of the most ambitious early robotic feats. The Soviets named features they saw, including the Sea of Moscow.
