About the Mission
Yuri Gagarin became the first human in space on April 12, 1961. The flight lasted 108 minutes, one orbit. He ejected from the capsule and parachuted separately. The Soviets hid the ejection for years to claim a complete landing. Gagarin died in a jet crash in 1968 at age 34.
