Hayabusa
About the Mission
The first mission to return material from an asteroid, though it nearly failed completely. Suffered engine breakdowns, fuel leaks, and a hopping robot that missed the surface. Still delivered over a thousand tiny grains from Itokawa in 2010. The crippled craft was nursed home across billions of km. One of the great salvage operations in spaceflight.
