Exploded 73 seconds after launch on January 28, 1986, killing all 7 crew. Caused by an O-ring failure in cold weather. Engineer Roger Boisjoly had warned of the risk the night before. Christa McAuliffe was to be the first teacher in space. The disaster grounded the shuttle fleet for nearly 3 years.
